NCHD Refunds Scheme


NCHD Agreement - Postgraduate Medical Education and Training - Refund of Examination and Course Fees

  1. The Board administers on behalf of the Department of health and Children and the Irish Medical Organisation a scheme, introduced in 1997, whereby non consultant hospital doctors (NCHDs) are reimbursed the fees paid by them in respect of specified postgraduate examinations and courses.

  2. NCHDs are entitled to a refund of fees, up to a maximum of €450 in a twelve month period, in respect of the approved examinations and courses listed on the a schedule beneath.

  3. Claims for a Refund of fees paid in respect of approved examinations/Courses should be submitted via Hospitals/Employing Authorities to This Board.

  4. Please note that

    1. fees can be reimbursed only in respect of the examinations and courses listed on the attached schedule, (Claims in respect of other courses and examinations should not be submitted to this Board);

    2. the maximum refund per individual NCHD is €450 for each twelve month period ending 30 November;

    3. in applying for a refund NCHDs must demonstrate that they have sat the examination and/or taken the course and supply a receipt in respect of same and where appropriate they must be obliged to provide evidence from their previous employers as to whether or not they have claimed a refund during the course of that employment;

    4. employers should insofar as is possible collate and submit to this Board all their claims together, rather than submitting many individual claims;

    5. incomplete claim forms will not be processed and will be returned to employing authorities;
    6. it is intended that refunds should be made promptly by employers to NCHDs on receipt of funding from this Board;

    7. the scheme applies only to NCHDs with a minimum of four months service in the public hospital sector;
